Okay, so I’m a bit delayed with this post, but as they say, but I was finally able to get back into my happy place a couple weeks ago – the gym! I actually did a happy dance while going down the steps into the establishment. (Yes, I’m a nerd).
The great thing is that you can work out on the general floor area as long as it doesn’t exceed the 50% capacity limit. There is no need to book in advance. When I went, it was actually pretty quiet with probably only 20% in attendance at that time, though I didn’t mind it since it gave me an opportunity to really focus on getting reacquainted with being back in that environment. I’m sure that has the general population is still easing themselves back into a lifestyle that has been suppressed for too long.
I had a little pep talk with the machines (okay, I’m not THAT weird), but it certainly felt great to use familiar equipment. 🙂 As I scanned the room, even with a handful of people, it was refreshing to see others also happily doing their own thing.
The next adventure that I am highly anticipating is group exercise – something I miss dearly. You do need to book your spot in advance now for those classes to adhere to capacity limits, so it’s just a matter of keeping an eye out for your favourite class.
Overall, it definitely feels different, and it has to given the past year and a half. I also find that I’m having to almost remind myself that I can actually go back again and that it wasn’t just a one-off! I think we’ve been so mentally marred by the back and forth of all these lockdowns and become so used to things being open for five minutes, only to be closed again, that this time, it’s like, ‘oh wait, you mean this is actually for the long haul? Okay fine, let me just take a minute to absorb that!’
For now though, I’m simply enjoying getting my own groove back and relishing in that gym-induced ‘high’ that had been absent for too long.
