The Gift of Gratitude: A Thanksgiving Reflection

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians. May this day bring you peace, happiness and moments to pause and reflect on everything you are thankful for.

With the chaos of the world circulating around us at any given time, it’s more important than ever to protect our inner peace and hold onto everything we should be thankful for. All we have control over is what’s in front of us, at the present moment.

Gratitude has a way of really humbling us. It calms us down just enough to really appreciate everything around us. It reminds us that even in times of uncertainty, there are still moments to feel happy and optimistic.

When we shift our mindset and choose to focus on what’s going right, no matter how small that may be, we start to see ourselves differently. Perception is reality, as the saying goes. We become more patient, more grounded, more grateful.

Here are 6 reminders of things to be thankful for:

1. The Warmth of Uplifting Connections

You’re grateful for those people in your life that always have your back – no matter what. They are always rooting for your success and genuinely want to see you happy. You leave the room feeling happier, lighter and more at peace after being in their presence.

2. The Strength You Didn’t Know You Had

All the challenges you’ve navigated, the dark places you’ve come out of without anyone knowing about it, the lessons you’ve learned, and the iron-clad resilience you’ve built along the way – none of it should go unnoticed. Growth isn’t always loud, but it is always impactful.

3. The Small Joys That Add Up

Sometimes gratitude shows up in the simplest ways: a stranger smiling at you and wishing you a good day before stepping off the elevator, someone holding the door a little longer than they needed to, an unexpected compliment that catches you off guard in the best way possible – these tiny gestures linger. They remind us that goodness exists everywhere, no matter how subtle, often without the added fanfare.

4. The Opportunities to Begin Again

Sometimes when life feels heavy or chaotic, you just need the universe to give you a fresh start. An opportunity to breathe deeply and hit the reset button – emotionally, physically, mentally, and spiritually. This could be in the form of a much-needed break from your usual routine We cannot keep moving forward without taking those necessary moments to refresh along the way.

5. Learning to Give More Grace

Life is far from linear. The ‘reel’ life on social media most often never reflects how things actually are. We all move through highs and lows, twists and turns, chapters we celebrate and chapters we’d rather leave behind.

And most of the time, we have no idea what someone else is carrying.

Being grateful often reminds us to be more empathetic, compassionate and understanding. It allows you to give people more grace without taking things too personally. It reminds you to keep doing you and keep working on you. Give people the space to deal with whatever they are dealing with on their own timeline. If the connection is meant for the long-term, they will come back to you when they are ready.

6. The Fragility of Life

This is a no-brainer. I find that as we get older, our mortality becomes more apparent. Life can shift drastically, in an instant. Social media algorithms are also a constant reminder of this as we are regularly inundated with news of the latest tragedy or the announcement of someone’s passing virtually anytime we log in. It all just reinforces how fleeting life really is. Being thankful for the simple gift of waking up, taking a breath, and experiencing another day is a quiet but profound gratitude.

So today, on Thanksgiving, let gratitude be more than just a list – let it be a mindset shift. A gentle reminder that even in a world that moves fast with all forms of chaos around us, there is always something anchoring us – and that is the gift of gratitude.
