Today felt like a day in mid-July with the sun shining bright and for ONCE, not a drop of rain. When I took a walk earlier, it was so refreshing to just feel the warm breeze and soak in the sun’s rays.
But it was a bittersweet feeling given the day that it was.
No matter how many years go by, September 11 will always be etched in our minds. I still remember the day that it happened like it was yesterday. I was in my first year of university and the student lounge was literally over-flowing with people with their eyes glued to the TV screens. I couldn’t even get into the room to see what had captured everyone’s attention, that’s how packed it was. I was completely bewildered, oblivious to what had happened. I had just come out of class and was non-nonchalantly on my way to take a short break.
After some probing, I was told that catastrophe had struck New York’s twin towers, and the rest of the day was just a wash. All classes were cancelled and it just mayhem at the main train station with people frantically trying to get home (for fear of the attacks heading North) and it was just sheer pandemonium. That was all also one of the rare times that the Toronto Star came out with a special edition of its daily newspaper in the middle of the day. Their regular copy for September 11, 2001 had already been distributed in the early morning hours, with a completely different look and feel – who would have thought that in a matter of a mere or two the headlines would change so dramatically?
Anyway, I just wanted to reiterate what is such an important reminder in life – and that’s sustaining your peace. As the quote above states, if something in your life is hindering your peace, it’s likely worth re-evaluating having it around. The fateful events of 9/11 and all others forms of tragedy where innocent lives have been lost are a stark reminder of the fragility or life and our mortality, and just how important it is to just have inner peace. With peace comes happiness, and with happiness comes positivity and those good vibes in herds can make great things happen. The world can be a better place if we allow ourselves to connect with each other through peace and positivity. The strength of that energy will ultimately win. God Bless.
