Don’t Dwell, You Might Hurt Yourself

As you go through the ups and downs of everyday life, do you ever find yourself paralyzed in your own head, dwelling and over-analyzing every single thing? You jump from one thought to the next and in a matter of milliseconds have played out at least a dozen different scenarios of how a certain life event might pan out?

Welcome to the club.

My entire life I have struggled with overthinking everything – sometimes it is so bad that my head actually feels like it will just burst.

It can be about anything really: for example: I might take an extra 10 – 15 minutes to leave in the morning just to make double and triple sure that I haven’t left any appliances on. Now you might equate that to OCD but it’s really just me thinking way more than is needed.

Overthinking is a bigger problem when you are facing a hurdle: It’s natural to dwell and allow your mind to take over a difficult event in your life. It becomes your main focus all the time and ultimately affects your overall happiness and sense of peace. It’s completely okay and natural for something to always be on your mind – especially if it’s something that will affect your overall well-being, but it’s detrimental when you let that thing become central to your entire life.

One example is job loss. Let’s face it – in this day and age, it is impossible to live on an unstable income. If you or a loved one’s employment situation has become unstable, that can absolutely have a tremendous toll on your physical and emotional well-being. You might find yourself losing sleep at night staying up into the wee hours wondering:

What’s going to happen if things don’t normalize soon?

How are we going to get by?

Of course, it’s natural to be concerned about your short-term future but it’s when you allow your situation to consume you, is when it can become troublesome.

So if you find yourself having a hard time sometimes regaining control of your mind back, just remember a few things:

Amnesia, Anyone?

Dwelling and over-thinking affects your short-term memory in a big way. Because you’re only focusing on one thing at any given time, you end up completely forgetting about other important things as well – and that will end up causing you even more stress. A great recent real-life example of this was from just a couple of days ago when my preoccupation with other thoughts led to a potential kitchen disaster. You can read about that here.

Plus, as hard as the burden of your situation might be, you’ve still got other responsibilities to tend to and it will become very hard to do so if you allow yourself to be consumed by one potential drawback. You need to find a way to manage your concern in a responsible way so that you can get through your daily activities.

The Power of Positive Thinking

I stand by this: if you choose not to dwell on all the negatives, you open up an opportunity to see the positives of your situation. Think and act optimistically (even when things look bleak) and the outcome is most likely to be in your favour.

Talk to the Right People

You’ll stop dwelling and ultimately swelling your head with your own thoughts, once you’ve unleashed some verbal diarrhea on those close to you. I say the ‘right’ people because you wouldn’t want to broadcast a personal challenge to just anyone, of course, but you absolutely should confide in a close, trusted confidant – someone who will not only mean well for you, but also send you the positive vibes that you need.

I’ve always found it hard to open up about things myself but have gotten better at it over the years. It really does help alleviate a lot of the stress that you end up carrying upon yourself when you keep everything bottled up inside.

Stay Active

This has become a staple throughout many of my blog posts and I stand by it. No matter how rough the going might get, I alway make sure I stay on top of the gym. It’s my one place to completely disconnect and immerse myself in the endorphin-fueled high that I can’t get enough of. So when you’re mind is getting the best of you, go for a jog, get your body moving somehow. Even better, grab a few friends and feed off of each other’s positive energy. You can never go wrong.

So when life throws you a curveball, try to steer clear of the mind trap of dwelling. Instead, accept the situation, adapt to it, be optimistic and focused, and the next turn will surely be a brighter one.

  1. I am currently reading (trudging through really) a book on “mindfulness”. There is a lot of information on being able to deal with all of the thoughts you have at once.
    I will write more when I get further into the book.
