Huatulco: An Exotic Beauty

Huatulco, Mexico

There is something quite humbling about booking a vacation last minute: either it will turn out great or potentially be disastrous. In our case, the former one prevailed, thankfully.

We weren’t sure about going away this holiday season, but when the snow started coming down with a vengeance, that was enough for us to decide to get on a plane and go down south as soon as possible.

After feverishly trying to see what our options were, we ended up in Huatulco, Mexico. A beautiful resort town on the Pacific coast of Mexico – a nice deviation from the more popular spots like Cancun or Mayan Riviera.

There is something uniquely beautiful about the Pacific side – a quiet and serene beauty – evident in the header image.

The resort we stayed at was Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa, and it was spectacular. Everything, from the resort staff to the quality of the rooms was stellar. If you’re ever looking to vacation with your significant other only, then this is the place for you.

The resort was strategically built that every single room had an ocean view.

In this photo below, the middle section was the Skybar – an outdoor lounge area overlooking the entire resort and ocean complete with an elevator at the end descending to the beach. It made for a really nice hang out spot at any time during the day.

Here’s a panoramic shot from the balcony: Breathtaking, isn’t it?

And as this photo illustrates, the weather was virtually perfect the entire time. It was 30+ degrees and not a drop of rain whatsoever. Clear blue skies and sunshine everyday – you couldn’t ask for a better scenario!

Although everything about the resort was beautiful, there is only so much lounging around one can do before it does start to get a bit boring. That’s where excursions become a good alternative and give you a good reason to be more active.

The ATV excursion that we did was truly the highlight of the trip! There is something quite exhilarating about ATV-ing through the jungles and dirt roads of Mexico. I wish I could say I drove one myself but I was too intimidated by the black and red beast of an automobile. My husband, on the other hand, drove it like he’d been driving ATV’s his entire life.

Here’s a shot of us during a quick pit stop during the adventure. I have to admit, it was quite nerve-wracking being on the back of one of these things – mainly because of the rugged terrain we were driving on and the narrow trails of the jungles that had to be so meticulously navigated through. I panicked only once when we were turning corners near 50 foot cliffs (can you blame me?!) but my husband had such control of the vehicle that I was able to remain pretty calm for the rest of the ride.

The bandannas were also a necessity because of the insane amount of dust being flown around. But it was honestly a super fun adventure – especially when at times, you found yourself meandering through Mexico traffic on these things and waving at the locals as you zipped by!

Speaking of locals, during our break we met the cutest little Mexican girls that were selling little trinkets on the beach.

Meet Luna and Sumarra – aren’t they the cutest?

They were so adorable and quite the savvy sales people with their assertiveness on how unique and valuable their seashell toys were.

I was personally intrigued by their creation because it was actually something quite original, something that you wouldn’t find in a gift shop – so I ended picking up these two.

The one on the right was just hilarious with the miniature bottle of Corona – only in Mexico! =D

The food at the resort was also pretty decent. Our favourite restaurant was the French one called Bourdeaux, because their steak was just exquisite! I wish I had snapped a picture of it before devouring it, but trust me, it was delicious.

Because we traveled during the festive season, the Christmas decor was on point with beautifully-decorated trees all throughout the resort.

This one in particular blew me away. I took a video to capture the beauty of the lights.

Overall, Huatulco is a beautiful destination and our resort was one of a kind. If you are looking to experience the true meaning of getting away to complete relaxation, peace and tranquility, this is your spot. I assure you, you won’t be disappointed.
