Don’t Fall Victim to Intention: Take Action Today

Image

As the clock keeps ticking and life continues to pass us by (can you believe it’s almost February?!), I wanted to reiterate this important life lesson: Cut the talk and walk the walk. As the quote above so eloquently states: all that is keeping you for doing great things for yourself is actually doing it.

As you continue to make positive changes in your life, the lure of distraction is always going to be a challenge – but that’s where you really need to remain focused on your priorities.

I often see too many people say they are going to do something that would contribute to the betterment of their life, but as time passes by, nothing seems to change. This concept not only gets old but quite boring.

I think it’s safe to say that all of us at some point fall victim to intention: We mean the best for ourselves, but allow external factors to get in the way of actually accomplishing our goals. This is where discipline becomes more important than ever before: If you have a goal in mind, then take action and make it happen. Do not keep saying that you will do something. In the words of Nike, just do it.

Also, in order to stay focused on your own goals, it also means that you need to surround yourself by people who are not a distraction to your goals, but rather foster the achievement of them. For example: if your personal goal is to get in shape but you are continuously associating with people that promote inactive, lazy lifestyles, then you might want to reconsider how much time you invest in their company, because their lifestyle choices are inadvertently keeping you from achieving your own goals. On the other hand, if your peers promote active, healthy living, their positive energy will nurture your own goals and indirectly help achieve them.

So just remember, when the onset of laziness tempts you to ‘leave it for tomorrow’ or ‘do it later’, stop right there and remember what you are trying to achieve. The choice that you make between breezing through three seasons of Breaking Bad or submitting one application per day for that dream job you yearn for will make all the difference. Make the right choices at the right time and you will be guaranteed a bright future filled with happiness, peace and fulfillment.

  1. Intending is something I’ve been doing for so long, and I end up being stuck in this self-delusion that I’m actually trying. It’s discouraging because my language then becomes, “I try so hard but nothing seems to change”. The truth is, and I only recently realised, I haven’t been trying; I’ve been intending.

    1. Thank you for your comment. Yes, I think it’s easy to blur the lines between intending and actually doing, but once you realize that, it becomes easier to change it. It’s not an overnight fix, of course, but more of a change in your mentality and perspective on things. 🙂

  2. Very very well said Sarah. You hit the nail on the head with this piece. We need to act on our intention and “just do it”. It’s also so true that we need to keep away from people who may be holding us back. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece 🙂
